Dexter Payne noticed the sound of clarinet as a young boy and began in school with an instrument his father had played. With great teachers, including the late Jack Fredericksen, he developed interest in jazz and saxophone. But the clarinet led on, into various music of the world, especially Brazilian chore jazz. He discovered music to be a potent language for expression and exploration of inner landscape, and a connecting tissue for building both intimate and greater community.
His path has led him to many musical experiences with amazing musicians in a long list of countries. Some of those make up his current Dexter Payne Quintet, and the group's next recording will be partially funded by Pathways to Jazz.
